Estonia's biggest sea and family festival the Tallinn Maritime Days will take place on 14-16 in July in the cruise area of Old City Harbour, Seaplane Harbour and Noblessner Marina. This year, even more attention will be paid to the environmental impact of the event, in order to carry out the big event with the smallest possible footprint.
Tallinn will be the green capital of Europe in 2023, and events, activities and organization aimed at the environment and sustainability will take place within this framework. "Systematic action to reduce environmental impacts is also unavoidable for large cultural and entertainment events. The more progressive organizers have been dealing with it for a long time now, and recently important regulations have also emerged. In order to achieve the greatest impact, it is necessary to constantly analyze and measure our activities and test new solutions, and here the city also plays an important role as a role model," said Deputy Mayor of Tallinn Kaarel Oja.
On this year's Maritime Days, only reusable dishes will be used in the trading and dining areas of the ports for all three days. Ringo, the pledge partner, makes sure that the packaging is recycled. When buying any food or drink at Tallinn Maritime Days, the buyer pays an additional one euro per tip, which can be refunded by taking the tip to Ringo's packaging collection point - a tent that can be found in every port. As another option, you can return the package and return the deposit to your personal bank account by scanning the QR code on the used package.
Visitors are also welcome to bring personal reusable water bottles, cups and food utensils. Each port has water points where you can get free tap water and refill your own bottle if you wish. When it comes to environmentally friendly organization, waste sorting is basic, and similar to previous years, waste will also be collected by type this year.
The most convenient and greenest way to get to the ports of sea days is by bicycle or walking. For those coming by bike, there are bicycle parking lots in every port during the Tallinn Maritime Days.
Furthermore, the Maritime Days program includes several events promoting green thinking. For example, for the first time, garbage divers will be present on sea days, i.e. the seabed will be cleaned in Noblessner Marina for two days. On-site commentators provide an ongoing overview of the entire process and activities, and an exhibition of the most interesting findings is organized.
On July 14, a special screening of the green capital will be held at the Kai outdoor cinema in Noblessner, where Wes Anderson's film "Sea Life in the Company of Steve Zissou" will be shown. It is an acclaimed comedy about the exciting adventures and struggles of ocean explorer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray). You can buy a ticket on the Kino Sõprus website.
